Adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Master the art of ground fighting. From your first class to competition day, we’ll guide you every step.
What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a grappling-based martial art whose central theme is the skill of controlling a resisting opponent in ways that force him to submit. Due to the fact that control is generally easier on the ground than in a standing position, much of the technique of BJJ is centered around the skill of taking an opponent down to the ground and wrestling for dominant control positions from where the opponent can be rendered harmless.
To control and overcome greater size, strength, and aggression with lesser size and strength is the keynote of the sport. This is done by utilizing superior leverage, grip, and position upon your opponent. Students of the sport gain a deep understanding of the workings and limits of the human body.
This knowledge can be used to subdue and control an opponent with whatever level of severity the student chooses. The path to this knowledge is physically and mentally demanding. Students benefit from greatly increased physical fitness, problem-solving ability, self-knowledge of their body and mind, and the many social benefits of working within a large group of like-minded fellow students as you learn and have fun together.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I wear to my first class?
For your first class, comfortable athletic wear is completely fine — shorts and a t-shirt work great. If you plan to continue training in the Gi (traditional uniform), you’ll eventually want to get a BJJ Gi. We can point you in the right direction on what to purchase. For No-Gi classes, board shorts or spats and a rash guard are ideal. Don’t worry about having the perfect gear on day one — just show up.
Do I need to own a gi?
Not right away. We recommend attending your first few classes in athletic wear to make sure BJJ is the right fit for you before investing in equipment. Once you decide to commit, a quality Gi is a worthwhile purchase and will last you for years. Our coaches can help recommend a good beginner option that won’t break the bank.
Is sparring (rolling) mandatory?
Absolutely not. Live rolling is an important part of BJJ development, but it is always optional — especially when you’re just getting started. Many newer students choose to observe rolling rounds or only participate in positional drilling until they feel ready. You set the pace of your own training, and our coaches and training partners will always respect that.
How long does it take to get a blue belt?
BJJ belt progression is genuinely earned and is not based on a fixed timeline. On average, students who train consistently (3-4 times per week) earn their blue belt somewhere between 12 and 24 months. Progress depends on your consistency, natural aptitude, and how actively you engage in drilling and rolling. The belt will come — focus on the process and enjoy the journey.
